For walkers, the cliffs offer great views, and the opportunity to see the algares (holes in the cliff where the sea has eroded the sandstone away from the base) which are synonymous with this part of the Algarve coast. The best examples of algares are near the lighthouse, but due to their fragile state they are fenced off for safety. Also on the cliffs are the remains of the Senhora da Conceição Fort which dates from the 17th century, and contains a hermitage dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Encarnação.
Alvor was originally a small fishing village situated at the mouth of the River Alvor. The 1755 earthquake which damaged so much of Portugal’s ancient town properties almost succeeded in demolishing most of the village’s Moorish architecture. Thankfully the 16th century Igreja Matriz with its elegant Manueline arches survived the disaster, and can be seen today.
The Alvor riverfront has been tastefully renovated in recent years and with its paved walkways, palms trees and beach bars it’s now a beautiful spot in which to sit and watch the fishing boats set off on their nightly fishing trips.
The resort has a long sandy beach backed by sand dunes, and at the eastern end, on the Blue Flag Praia de Três Irmãos, there are some amazing rock formations. This end of the beach also has several good hotels, restaurants and beach bars.
In town you will find a labyrinth of narrow streets lined with eateries catering for all tastes – traditional Portuguese restaurants, of course, but all happily sharing the space with Italian trattorias, Indian and Chinese restaurants and Irish bars.
Alvor town property is much sort-after, but there are numerous developments springing up on the outskirts of the town, which offer modern luxury accommodation, often with pools and small restaurants. The local council is very keen to preserve the charm of Alvor, whilst recognising that the resort has much to offer tourists, who are an important factor in the region’s economy.
When the novelty of the beach begins to wear off there is plenty to occupy both children and adults.
